During Easter it is being celebrated that Jesus Christ resurrected from the dead. The week before Easter is called ‘Holy Week’, ‘Maundy Thursday’ and ‘Good Friday’ take place in this ‘Holy Week’. On Maundy Thursday, the Last Supper is commemorated and on Good Friday the crucifixion and death of Jesus is commemorated. Every year Easter falls on a different date. The date of Easter depends on the moon. The first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or soonest after 21 March is when Easter takes place.
In many Western countries it is a tradition to color hard-boiled eggs. On Easter Morning the Easter Bunny hides all the eggs and children will search for those eggs a so-called ‘Egg Hunt’. During Easter usually a big brunch is given.
In some Western countries there is also an Easter Monday, like in The Netherlands. In most Nordic countries Easter is a public holiday, but in The Netherlands it is a national holiday. You can say that all countries celebrate Easter in their own way but the meaning behind Easter stays the same; the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
On Bali Easter is celebrated by only those of the Christian faith and throughout Bali it consists out of religious ceremonies performed at the various churches on the island and within private homes. The Christians mostly go to church ceremonies but there are also many hotels and resorts that arrange Easter activities. So no need to worry, there is plenty to do and see during Easter here on Bali.
Meanwhile, in the other part of Indonesia, In the town of Larantuka, East Flores the week before Easter – in other countries called the Holy Week – is in Larantuka called ‘Semana Santa’ which is considered to be a time of self-reflection and confession.
During the Easter ceremony in Larantuka there are two statues that are the main characters, they represent Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary.
Good Friday starts with the opening of Capela Tuan Ma for the people who come to pray at the Virgin Mary Statue. The statue of Jesus is brought to its counterpart, the Virgin Mary, in a procession of about seven kilometers.
During the procession, the litigants stop at eight small chapels to pray ant to remember the suffering of Jesus Christ. When the two statues are united, they continue their journey together to Katedral Reinha Rosari.
