Nyepi Day 2017 (Day of Silence)
March 28th, 2017
Commemorating the start of the Hindu New Year, Nyepi Day is a day of complete silence where the Balinese spends the day fasting and resting in contemplation and meditation. It is observed from 6am to 6am the following day and no bright lights are allowed along with working, entertainment, pleasure, traveling; and, for some, no talking or eating at all. On this day, Bali's usually bustling streets and roads are empty, with little or no noise from TVs, radios, clubs and restaurants with few signs of activities. The only people to be seen outdoors are the Pecalang, traditional security men who patrol the streets to ensure the prohibitions are being followed.
