Interview with Mr. Oriol Montal
General Manager at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali
We recently met with Mr. Oriol Montal, the new General Manager at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali. A father of two, Mr. Montal hails from Spain and brings with him 24 years of experience from the hospitality industry. He’s been in love with Bali since he first set foot on the island in 2002. Now he sits at the helm of one of the most sought-after 5-star resort brands in Bali and says he wants to explore the island as much as he can while learning more of its culture, people and cuisine.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I love to travel, but my family always comes first. I have two little girls, aged 6 and 3 and they are the highlight of my day. I come from a family of boys, I have 3 brothers who all have boys and so my girls are really special to us. I am also a big fan of diversity – here is where travel comes in. The next destination always excites me and Asia has always been a favourite destination of mine. I find the culture, people and food fascinating, especially here in Indonesia, which I find very safe and exotic.
You have experiences from all over the world. Where were you before The Westin Bali? And why did you choose Bali for your current posting?
I was at the JW Marriott in Phuket, Thailand for 4 years. I first came to Bali in 2002 and I immediately fell in love with the island and I think Bali is the perfect location for my family and me. After all, Bali is an ideal destination for families, and The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali is a great brand. All the boxes were ticked, everything fell into place and we decided to make our move. I genuinely feel that Bali is a very unique and well-rounded destination thanks to its culture, location, the people and the environment.
The Westin Bali is a prestigious resort with many unique offerings. Wellness, health, dining, family facilities and an amazing beachfront location in Nusa Dua seem to be the resort’s major selling points. Will there be plans to introduce new facilities, programs or themes etc in the near future?
I am not here to make a transformation. The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali is already an immensely successful brand, and everything here is running as it should be, like clockwork, thanks to the brand’s strong positioning and the very hardworking teams throughout the various departments. Today, the resort has a very clear identity with regard to all of its 6 wellness of wellbeing pillars – Sleep Well, Eat Well, Move Well, Work Well, Play Well and Feel Well and I am here to support and elevate the resort’s positioning with leadership through teamwork. Together with my team, we will work on what we can do better, see how we can enhance current experiences and continue to provide authentic experiences for our guests.
Tell us more about the resort’s WOW factors.
The resort is in a very unique location and is within the safe and tranquil compound of the ITDC in Nusa Dua, Bali. In my opinion, this is one of the very best locations and beaches in South Bali especially for families who are looking for security, luxury and comfort. The resort offers a plethora of facilities for guests from dining, health and wellness, family and children and MICE facilities. Those coming with the family will find all their needs and their children’s needs will be met while couples, honeymooners or solo travelers looking for romance, relaxation and privacy will also find their needs met here. I believe that this is a unique trait at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali, where you can find a great balance and blend of both. The Resort has an amazing Family Suite – each suite comprises two totally separate rooms with a living room and separate entrances. It was thoughtfully designed to give full leverage to parents with two or more children. The design of our Family Suites gives parents the flexibility and the privacy that they will need.
What are some of the resort’s charity program? How do you give back to the community?
We conduct various CSR activities like mangrove planting, contribute to selected orphanages and we also continuously participate in a charity run event called Run To Give together with other Marriott International colleagues in Bali. Also we support groups that hold meetings and conferences at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali to be able to contribute to local charities during their time in Bali.
What do you love the most about The Westin Bali?
Definitely my team – they genuinely care and are truly passionate in what they do. Here at the resort, you can find a seamless blend of two generations; those who have been here for decades and know the ins and outs of the industry and the resort, and the new recruits, the millennials who are quick to learn and are excited. I really love the resort’s unique wellness offering as well as its dining offering that can please everyone.
What is your management philosophy?
I believe in empowering my team and those around me, to give opportunities to grow. Trust is very important as well as an open-door policy. I try not to have any filters between myself and my team, and I am happy when I see that they are happy and are enjoying what they do. I enjoy eating with my staff and team members; we eat together in the cafeteria often. I believe that you can learn a lot of those around you when you eat together at a table.
Any tips to first-time visitors to Bali?
The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali is the ideal holiday home away from home and it is the perfect place to return to after a busy day out exploring. Do make it a point to visit other parts of the island and for those who love culture, arts & crafts, you can spend a few days in Ubud. While in Bali, do try to connect with its culture and the people.
What do you like to do during your free time?
If I am not spending time with my family, I love to explore. Now that I am in Bali, I want to spend more time discovering the island, get to know the local people and try the local food. My favourite Balinese dish is the Bebek Goreng (Fried Duck in Balinese Spices) as its taste is very new to me.
