Balinese women are known to have produced extraordinarily lovely textiles for temple ceremonies and dance costumes. When in 1930’s they turned their traditional skills to lace, they mastered techniques which were fast disappearing elsewhere. This fact continues to ring true for Ibu Ni Made Jati, lovingly known as Ibu Made, the heart and soul behind the Uluwatu brand. Famous for its exquisite collections of white, handmade lace resortwear and nightwear for women, enchanting bed linens, and a legacy of table linens, each Uluwatu piece is destined to become family heirlooms.

At just 17, after years of selling sarongs, drinks and handicrafts to the first surfers who appeared in Kuta in the 1970s, Ibu Made established her first enterprise; selling handmade lace blouses. Through pure hardwork and ingenuity, she saved enough to fly to America in 1978 with her Australian partner, and enjoyed 9 wonderful months in San Diego selling Balinese garments out of a VW Combi. Today, Ibu Made runs 13 successful Uluwatu boutiques and a restaurant, KORI Restaurant & Bar in Poppies Lane II.

Each Uluwatu handmade piece is exquisite; each item is individually handcrafted by a single worker, using antique pedal-powered machine to maintain quality and consistency. It may take up to three days to complete a garment and five days to complete a bed cover, no two pieces are exactly the same, and the end result is a unique piece of true Balinese artwork, a beautiful piece of art to keep for a lifetime.
