Hotel Vila Lumbung Celebrates Its Anniversary with Elaborate Balinese Ceremony
On August 26th 2018, Hotel Vila Lumbung held a Piodalan, or a Balinese ceremony to thank the Gods for past and future successes. A Piodalan is held every six months based on the Balinese Lunar Calendar. All are welcomed to join in or observe as the Balinese pray and place special offerings at the main temple area. The celebration includes decorating the temple with colourful flowers, presentations of offerings, food and special anointing. Hotel Vila Lumbung’s Piodalan was held in the temple located at the hotel entrance from 10.00 am pm to 03.00 pm. During the ceremony, the resort’s premises were purified and cleansed with prayers, holy water and offering while all involved expressed gratitude for all the fortune, health and togetherness received all year long.
As part of the celebrations, Hotel Vila Lumbung team members performed a unique tradition in the morning from 05.00 am to 12.00 am, called Mebat. It is a social occasion which is usually practised in the traditional village or sub-village where the Hindu community gather together to make traditional foods and offerings. During Mebat, the Hotel Vila Lumbung team member, especially the males, were assigned with different tasks such as preparing seasoning, processing meat and cooking.
There were also ritual Rejang dances performed during the Piodalan. Rejang Dance is a sacred dance, and three types of Rejang dance werel performed on that day; Rejang Renteng, Rejang Dewa & Rejang Sari. The dances of Rejang Renteng & Rejang Sari were performed by the ladies of Hotel Vila Lumbung, while Rejang Dewa was performed by a group of little girls in special yellow fabrics. They were wearing beautiful handmade tower shape headdress made of dried palm leaf dyed with pretty colours.
The event ended with Megibung, where everyone dined together to demonstrate togetherness. It is an activity where everyone sit together and dine from one big plate. The teams at Hotel Vila Lumbung and its sister company, The ONE Legian, along with the media invitation to share rice and side dishes presented on a huge plate made from banana leaf & woven coconut leaf. The menu itself was purely prepared by Hotel Vila Lumbung through the Mebat activity, including lawar (pork, chicken & starfruit leaf), satay lilit, sayur ares, and chicken betutu.
At the very end, Hotel Vila Lumbung internally held a mini competition featuring Bali Kuno Fashions that featured 5 couples from 5 departments at Hotel Vila Lumbung.
