Munggu Village, Mengwi
This unique ritual falls on the same day as Kuningan and takes place in the village of Munggu in Mengwi, which was the centre of the ancient Mengwi kingdom, and is a fantastic opportunity to stand witness to an age-old tradition dating back to the 17th century. Males of the village will re-enact the victorious battles of the Blambangan war by running out into the streets while brandishing long and stiff bamboo poles. The ends of the poles are combined in mid-air to form a makeshift pyramid. Opponents will climb the peak for a friendly face-off as onlookers and other participants cheer on. The event starts at 2pm and lasts throughout the afternoon. Visitors are encouraged to stand by and watch, but please do not try to participate as this is considered disrespectful to the ritual.
