Greetings, Friends of Alaya!

Welcome to the latest monthly e-newsletter. As it’s closer towards the summer holiday season, there will be a lot going on over the coming weeks with plenty of fun things to see and do. The island’s Muslim community will commence Ramadan in early May, which is the Islamic holy month of fasting whereby no food or drink is consumed between the hours of sunrise and sunset. Meanwhile, Balinese Hindus are preparing to celebrate Saraswati, a day dedicated to knowledge. This is closely followed by Pagerwesi, a time to strengthen one’s mind and soul against evil forces. Everyone will return home to their ancestral villages to pray and feast together during this island-wide celebration.

Looking forward to welcoming you in Bali soon!

A Week of Temple Festivities

Alaya Resort Ubud Hosts a Balinese Piodalan Celebration

As a part of Alaya Resort Ubud’s commitment to preserving Bali’s rich cultural heritage, the resort recently hosted a week-long schedule of religious activities that are in line with the island’s Tri Hita Karana concept. The resort has always endeavored to prioritize the Hindu religion with regular temple visits and conducting relevant ceremonies in accordance with the Balinese calendar. These ongoing efforts have not gone unnoticed and the resort has been acknowledged in the prestigious NOW Bali Awards 2019 as a respected company that honours Balinese values.

Alaya Resort Ubud’s ‘Week of Temple Festivities’ in conjunction with its Piodolan (temple anniversary celebration) was conducted from11th to 17th April 2019. It involved a series of exciting events included a Macapat & Mekidung Competition, Gebogan Competition, Mereresik Competition, Ngias Pelinggih and Tirta Yatra that culminated in the actual Piodalan Ceremony itself. Alaya staff members contributed not only their time but also their artistic talents to this festival with vibrant dance performances such as the Rejang Renteng and Baris Jago.

Throughout this colourful week of religious undertakings, Alaya Resort Ubud invited all in-house guests as well as media partners to experience its unique temple festival. They were given the opportunity to dress in traditional sarongs and pray alongside staff members to express gratitude for all of the blessings bestowed by God Almighty. The ceremony reinforced the resort’s commitment to Tri Hita Karana, a Balinese Hindu lifestyle philosophy that is all about maintaining a harmonious balance between mankind (Pawongan), the environment (Palemahan) and God Almighty (Parahyangan).

Balinese Megibung to Celebrate Alaya CEO’s Birthday

Mr. Jimmy Gunawan, CEO of Alaya Hotels & Resorts, recently celebrated his 40th birthday in true Balinese style on two separate occasions together with his beloved family and all staff members. The first event was held at Alaya Dedaun Kuta on 15th April 2019 and everyone was invited to enjoy a shared Megibung Lunch. The next party took placed at Alaya Resort Ubud on 18th April 2019 whereby staff members also got to take pleasure in an artistically arranged Megibung Lunch. According to Mr. Jimmy, both celebrations were the manifestation of his gratitude to God Almighty and an expression of deep gratitude to all employees for their continued dedication to the company.

For the Balinese, the spirit of togetherness can be witnessed particularly during religious ceremonies and social events. Megibung is one such activity that demonstrates a sense of community and togetherness. It is essentially a communal dining experience where people sit as a group on the ground and traditionally share food from a large plate or piece of banana leaf. This village custom, which originated in Karangasem regency, is not only about sharing food, it is also an opportunity to engage in light conversation and get to know each other better. The term Megibung derives from the Balinese word “gibung”, which means to “share with each other”. By hosting both Megibung Lunches for his birthday, Mr. Jimmy hopes that togetherness and family values are always interwoven within the Alaya work environment.

During his birthday speech, Mr. Jimmy explained that Alaya means home and that he intends to honour this definition by creating a real home in every aspect for everyone. He is passionate about the happiness of all staff members and he has gone to great lengths to ensure that Alaya feels like a second home. This is deeply rooted in the belief that a content team will provide excellent service that comes from the heart and this in turn stimulates guest satisfaction.
