“Sculpture is form in space visible to the mobile spectator-participant.”
Carola Vooges. The sculpture of Dutch sculptor and long time Bali resident, Carola Vooges, has always been contemplative and dreamy. It is an exploration of primordial forms and archetypes aimed at triggering sensual and spiritual associations. ‘Head in the Clouds’ is a minimal presentation of only 5 new works with surprises. In them Vooges turns her eyes upwards to acknowledge the Sky, Planets, Moons, Stars, Celestial Phenomenon and Comets while noting parallels with her first love the Sea. This is seen in “Galaxy” and “Milky Way”, which could belong to either world. One of the most powerful works is “Obelisk” an architectural stele that rises up into the stratosphere. This cluster of Babel-lie towers speaks of inter-galactic travel and exotic structures built by alien cultures on unknown planets.
The grain and colorations of the carefully selected woods Vooges uses add yet another dimension. These are like the sonic sub-tones that make the resonance of certain instruments richer and fuller of expression. Her unusual forms and textures and structure also demand our full attention if we are to appreciate her melodies and harmonics. So, too, her deep connection with Bali, Vooges’ home for more than two decades, shimmers beneath the surface. The old balance between Humans and Nature, Sky and Ocean strike equilibrium.
