A full month of daily cultural performances, theater and music activities, classical dances, historical exhibitions, seminars, workshops, handicraft exhibitions and folk arts, Bali Art Festival is a wonderful spectacle and a great introduction to Balinese artistic traditions and culture. Approximately 180 art performances from 12 provinces in Indonesia and eight foreign countries - South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, India, China, Mexico and the United States contribute in this festival. It is the biggest event of its kind in the country which is attended by thousands of spectators.
Held since 1978, the Bali Arts Festival was initiated by the former Director General of Culture (1968-1978) and Governor of Bali (1978-1988), Ida Bagus Mantra. The idea was taken from the culture tourism concept, where the tourism should be for Bali instead of Bali for tourism. As part of a larger reaping of regional cultures for national purposes, the festival is aimed at nurturing and preserving the traditional agrarian culture while adapting it to the demands of modernity. This year, the 31st Bali Art Festival is held from June 13th through July 11th, 2009. Taken place at Puputan Renon Denpasar, this cultural landmark is one of the biggest annual events that everyone should not miss.
