Bali Hai Cruises: Build Your Own Reef
The next time you're in Bali, you could have an adventure out at sea with Bali Hai Cruises, Indonesia's leading marine tourism company providing day cruises and overnight cruises to the surrounding waters of Bali including to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, which are homes to a vast array of marine life.
Did you know that there are 5 times more fish species found here in Nusa Lembongan than in the Caribbeans? The island's economy is also extremely reliant on the marine life, which lives in reefs surrounding the island.
Sadly, due to human activities and other causes, the reefs surrounding these areas are slowly being affected. This would mean a decline in marine population, which would, in turn, impact the local economy while also causing great distress to the eco-system.
With this in mind, Bali Hai Cruises has embarked on a Coral Reef Restoration Program with Mars, Inc, in the hopes to reverse the negative impact seen on the reefs surrounding Nusa Lembongan.
Customers and visitors embarking with Bali Hai Cruises can also participate in this conservation effort by building their own reefs underwater along with a professional guide to assist.
Visitors could join in the construction of “spiders,” lightweighted metal grip which will be attached to live coral fragments to encourage coral growth. They are then lowered into the ocean and secured by using stakes and cable ties. Visitors could also join in the activity of removing excess algae on the "spiders" until the fishes take over their natural role of cleaning the reef.
Bali Hai Cruises began its conservation effort with just 200sqm of area, which has continued to grow thanks to the placement of at least 2 "spiders" per day, with the aim to plant at least 700 "spiders" per year. Results can usually be seen as quick as 3 weeks after each "spider" has been placed and results will continue to be monitored both by Bali Hai and the Reef Check Foundation.
