There’s a special place in the hearts of many for Bali’s very own Mason Elephant Park & Lodge and this includes internationally-renowned celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and the rest of the Kardashian clan who visited, fell in love and returned once again to play, feed and cuddle with the friendly Sumatran pachyderms. Initiated in 1997 and set within the misty hinterlands of Ubud, the park was created in response to the devastating situation in Sumatra where rampant deforestation and poaching has dwindled the native elephant population. A vast majority of what remains of the wild are placed within concentration camps where they receive poor and insufficient nourishment, no proper medical care with an average life expectancy of 3 – 8 years. It is estimated that by the year 2026, the Sumatran elephant will be completely extinct in the wild.
Rescued from their destroyed rainforest homes by the family founders of Mason Adventures, Nigel and Yanie Mason, 31 elephants now find sanctuary and safety in the park. Sprawled across 4 hectares, the founders, along with their sons, Jian and Shan Mason, pour their hearts and souls into these gentle giants’ welfare, promising that each elephant here will never again feel hunger, fear or distress, and will live long and very healthy lives. All elephants, 4 of which were naturally born here are loved and cared for, and have countless opportunities to feed, play and interact with each other, alongside the park’s daily visitors who can be seen feeding, playing and bathing them.
Independently audited by strict animal welfare standards, the park is an active supporter of other like-minded international charities, and recognised by the international community and welfare organizations such as the National Geographic Society as a Welfare Supporter and the World Wildlife Foundation as a Partner in Conservation. Celebrities who recognize the family’s passion and hard work include Sir Richard Branson, Julia Roberts, David and Victoria Beckham, Alicia Keys, and even Steve Irwin, who said that the park was the “best elephant park” he had ever seen.
