Meet the Newest Member of the Mason Family!

Just as the summer holiday season was beginning to heat up in Bali, the Mason Elephant Park & Lodge welcomed their newest addition, a beautiful and healthy baby boy. Seeing as he was born at the very end of the month of June, and since he was such a handsome little guy, the family decided to name him Arjuna, inspired by the Mahabharata. He was healthy 120 kilos at birth and was standing strong within 30 minutes and walking within the hour. He took his first breast milk 4 hours later and was quite tall even for baby Sumatran elephant standards. He is a newest member of an extremely fragile and one of the world’s most critically-endangered species, where sadly they are predicted to be completely extinct in their natural habitat by as early as 2028, due to poachers and rampant deforestation.

His mother, Fatimah, who was rescued at the tender age of 5 years, is now 30 and Arjuna is now her second baby to be born at the Mason Elephant Park since she first arrived. Her first baby girl, named Jegeg, was born 10 years ago and is still at the park with her mother and the rest of the herd of now 32 Sumatran elephants. After ten years since the park initially started its natural breeding program, this birth was now its fifth, with two more babies are expected within the next 6 to 8 months.

Sumatra is the last stronghold of this rare sub-species of Asian elephant that is literally running out of time with the destruction of its native jungle home, but despite the dismal situation, it’s heartwarming events like this that make the Mason family proud to see that there is still hope for a future for this incredible species of gentle giants.

All guests to the Mason Elephant Park & Lodge are more than welcome to come visit and say hi to baby Arjuna any day of the week from 9am to 6pm. For more information, check out
