Indonesia surfing team is competing at ISA World Surfing Games in Japan
Indonesia’s surfing team comprising Rio Waida, Oney Anwar, Ketut Agus, Taina Izquierdo, Dhea Natasha, and Diah Rahayu is at the ISA (International Surfing Association) World Surfing Games 2019 in Tokyo, Pemburu Ombak reports. The team is competing against other world-class surfers to secure their spots at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The team departed to Tokyo on Wednesday (9/4), together with Coaches Arya Subiyakto, Rizal Tandjung, Dylan Amar, and Hudi. Arya Subiyakto is optimistic that the team will perform their bests and bring home glory for the country.
“They have been practising really hard and they were very tenacious with their training. I think Indonesia will do well this year. Let’s hope for the best,” said Arya Subiyakto, also the Head of Indonesia Surfing Association (PSOI).
The competition is happening from September 7th to September 15th in Miyazaki, Japan. Around 240 surfers from 55 nations— including some big names like Jeremy Flores, Courtney Conlogue, Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, Kanoa Igarashi and Carissa Moore are competing over the golden tickets to Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Indonesia very own Rio Waida will also be competing along with five surfing athletes from Indonesia. Rio recently gained recognition after he excel at his last performance during the 2019 World Surf League (WSL). As reported by CNN Indonesia, Rio finished with a total score of 9.60, which is 0.06 higher than Gabriel Medina, the two-times world champion at the WSL competition last May in Bali.
