Nyepi Day, or the Balinese Day of Silence is a wonderful time to be in Bali! It’s your chance to experience a unique Balinese celebration that is one-of-a-kind in all the world. Nyepi marks the start of the Hindu New Year when the entire island goes into complete silence and when the sun sets, complete darkness for 24-hours. It is observed from 25 March 2020 at 6am until 26 March 2020 at 6am.
From a philosophical point of view, Nyepi is a time for purification. After an entire year, the island would have had its share of negative or unwanted energies and all the ceremonies and prayers leading up to Nyepi were designed for the purpose of cleansing. Ceremonies would begin days before, when holy effigies in temples and homes are taken to water sources, which is also known as Melasti. One day before Nyepi, the island will hold a mass purification ceremony, which will take place in all villages across the island. The purification ceremony is also more popularly known as the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade or the Monster Parade, the most exciting thing about Nyepi. While it holds significant spiritual value, the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade creates a unique atmosphere, very much like an outdoor street party. This is something that you really don’t want to miss – Ogoh-Ogoh or demon effigies with bulging eyes made of bamboo, papier-mache and cloth are carried through the streets in torch-lit parades, the Ogoh-Ogoh’s purpose is to bewilder evil spirits to flee and cease harming human beings. Parades will take place throughout Bali in all major towns and villages.
When the night of the parade ends, the entire island falls silent for 24-hours. airports and seaports close, streets are empty, businesses are closed and doors and windows are all shuttered tight. Silence descends over the entire Island of Bali. Local rules and regulations demand that visitors in Bali stay within the confines of their hotel grounds until sunrise on 26th March 2020.
The philosophy behind the silence and the emptiness is to trick evil spirits into believing that the island of Bali is uninhabited. They would, therefore, bypass Bali and head to neighbouring islands. During this time, the Balinese people will spend the days in retrospection, meditation and prayer while spending quality time away from the stress of everyday life together with their families and loved ones.
Visitors planning to experience this unique cultural tradition this year can pick and choose from a myriad of value-for-money packages provided by hotels, villas and resorts throughout the island. These “Nyepi Packages” or “Silent Day Packages” come inclusive of 3-days and 2-nights stay, daily breakfast, one-time lunch and one-time dinner for two and a myriad of other benefits.
