The Deputy Governor of Bali Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati confirmed that the Nusa Dua area of Bali will be a pilot of the “new normal” scheme for the tourism sector. At present, a number of preparations are underway, involving both the local government and business players.
“Certainly, we are still reviewing Bali’s readiness. Judging from the spread of Covid-19 in Bali, it is quite good. The meaning of flat is that there are not very many confirmed cases; with many recoveries” he told the press.
He said the directive was directly by President Joko Widodo. This is due to the fact that Bali is considered to have a good track record in global tourism.
“Mr. President is very appreciative and hopes that Bali will be the first to re-open Indonesia; Bali is prioritized. When the offer comes from the central government, of course we will assess the strength of Bali,” said the Deputy Governor who is familiarly referred to as Cok Ace.
A number of factors have already taken into account. Among them is readiness to meet health protocols. All businesses must implement these. Cok Ace said the application of the protocols are so that people feel safe. Also, as tourism is re-started, not everything will be opened at once.
“Of course we have to be selective; it is not possible to open everything at once, because the abilities of the people from all regions in Bali are not the same,” said Cok Ace, who served as Bali Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI).
He also explained why Nusa Dua was chosen, citing factors such as its facilities and regional integration.
“Observing the readiness and the management of the area, I see Nusa Dua as the most prepared as it is managed by one management body. The other areas in Bali are managed by many indigenous village organizations, so it is rather difficult for us to control how health protocols are implemented properly. But we will continue to oversee the implementation” he said.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has asked his staff to calculate a correct strategy to revive the tourism industry amidst the current coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
“We must prepare a special strategy for the promotion of tourism in this new normal era” Jokowi said on Thursday (28/5).
Jokowi asked his staff to focus on attracting domestic tourists to various tourist destinations. However, the government will not simply open a number of tourist destinations without careful consideration.
“I ask for the identification of tourist areas. Areas of tourist destinations that have both the R0 (basic reproductive number; a measure of the disease’s potential) and Rt (the virus’s actual transmission rate at a given time) under one, so that we really can gradually open the tourism sector,” he said.
