The plan to build a rail-less hybrid train/ bus system in Indonesia has been revealed. The Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) will be developed in Indonesia, with the first pilot area to be carried out in Bali.
In PT KAI’s (Kereta Api Indonesia) official Instagram account, @Keretaapikita, it was announced that KAI, together with the Central and Regional Governments, is planning and discussing the development of rail-based urban mass transportation system in several major cities in Indonesia, with ART as one of the options.
ART is one type of rail technology that was recently introduced and tested by CRRC Zhuzhou China on May 8, 2018. ART was driven on the highway with on specially marked lanes. ART looks more like a tram but uses rubber wheels and is powered by electricity.
On May 18, 2018, the Directors of PT KAI had the opportunity to try the ART system. After the visit, a collaboration was agreed upon between KAI and CRRC Zhuzhou China to develop the operation of the ART Tram in Indonesia. An MoU was signed between KAI and CRRC TEC on May 18, 2018.
On March 9, 2020, a legal ART study conducted by UGM (Gadjah Mada University) was completed and the results were presented to the Directorate General of Railways/ Ministry of Transportation on May 7, 2020.
PT KAI will introduce this Chinese-made ART system for operations in Bali. Director of PT KAI Didiek Hartantyo explained that ART will initially connect the Ngurah Rai International Airport to the Sanur area.
“Within the urban transport plan in Bali, in accordance with the national railroad master plan, the railroad master plan for the Bali area is included in the 2020-2024 National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and a train will be built that will connect Ngurah Rai Airport to Sanur” Hartantyo stated.
