Covid-19 cases during the past week beginning on August 23 have gradually decreased coinciding with the implementation of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) in Java and Bali. Declines also occurred in cases of recovery and deaths.
The extension of PPKM in Java and Bali is entering the last day on Monday, August 30th. The government will decide on the status of the extension today.
Last week’s extension was the fifth since the government pulled the PPKM emergency brake on July 3 (initially until July 20th). If PPKM is extended tomorrow, that will become the 6th period of tiered PPKM.
The number of confirmed cases in Java and Bali during the last week of PPKM reached 46,151 cases. The decline in cases was evident starting Thursday (26/8), with average cases dropping below 10,000.
The most new daily cases during the past week was still dominated by West Java with more than 5,000 average new daily cases, followed by East Java with over 1,000 new cases. Greater (DKI) Jakarta, Banten, Jogyakarta, and Bali all reported average new confirmed cases below 500.
The highest number of confirmed new cases in Java and Bali was recorded on August 24 and 25, with the addition of more than 10,000 cases. New confirmed cases then fell to 4,000 cases per day for several days in a row.
Meanwhile, during the past week of PPKM, recorded Covid-19 deaths also decreased since August 24. The highest number of deaths was recorded on August 24, with the figure dropping to around 400 cases per day by August 28.
East Java continued to lead in reported Covid-19 deaths during the last week with an average of over 100 deaths. Six other provinces recorded less than 100 deaths over the last week.
The highest number of reported deaths in Java and Bali was recorded on August 24 with 715. West Java led with 314 deaths, followed by East Java with 185.
Cases of recoveries during the last week of PPKM in Java and Bali also fell to 7,099 as of August 28. The highest number of recoveries was recorded on August 24 with 21,841 cases.
West Java still leads with an average of over 5,000 recoveries, followed by East Java with an average of over 1,000 recoveries.
It is not yet known whether the government will extend or end the PPKM period. The possibility exists of lowering the PPKM level in several regions. Last week, the government lowered the PPKM level in several areas, including the Jakarta Metropolitan area to level 3.
With the lowered PPKM levels, a number of sectors have also been opened, ranging from places of worship, shopping centers, sports facilities as well as permits to conduct face-to-face learning (PTM).
